PhD Position in Computer Security and Software Testing at Umeå University
Umeå University in Sweden is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Computing Science with a focus on Computer Security, supervised by Professor Alexandre Bartel. The position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), Sweden’s largest research initiative in AI and software. The research will be conducted in the Software Engineering and Security (SES) group and centers on software testing, fuzzing, and evaluating the robustness of virtual machines, particularly in Java/Android environments. Key research areas include code analysis, static analysis, reverse engineering, defense mechanisms, vulnerability detection, exploit mitigation, scalability, software quality, malware, and computer security.

Applicants must hold a second-cycle degree (or equivalent, at least 240 ECTS credits with 60 at second-cycle level) and have completed at least 90 credits in computer science or closely related subjects. Strong programming skills (C, Java, Python), a solid understanding of computer systems (assembly, compilers), and a genuine interest in computer security are required. Personal qualities such as teamwork, communication, discipline, curiosity, and creativity are valued. The position is fully funded with a monthly salary according to the university’s doctoral student salary ladder. The employment may be extended up to five years if departmental service (e.g., teaching) is included. The expected start date is April 1, 2026, or as otherwise agreed.
