Model-based Glycaemic Control for Gestational Diabetes Patients

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects a significant proportion of pregnancies in Malaysia, leading to adverse outcomes for both mothers and their children. This PhD project at Monash University Malaysia aims to address the challenge of optimal glycaemic control for GDM patients by developing a computational, personalised model that integrates physiological modelling, data-driven algorithms, and real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data. The research will focus on providing safe, adaptive, and culturally relevant guidance for glucose management during pregnancy, leveraging advances in biomedical engineering, health informatics, and systems engineering. The project is supervised by Associate Professor Alpha Agape (main supervisor), with co-supervision from Associate Professors Chiew Yeong Shiong and Ooi Ean Hin, and Dr. Lim Sing Sheng. The research spans multiple disciplines, including biomedical engineering, electronic engineering, mechatronics, robotics, nutrition, and remote sensing, offering a multidisciplinary environment for innovative solutions in diabetes care. Successful applicants will be awarded the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which includes a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months. To be eligible, candidates must hold a First Class Honours (H1) degree or its equivalent (H1E) recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meet the English language requirements. The scholarship is open until filled, with interviews expected in February 2026 and a deadline for applications on April 29, 2026. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to determine suitability for the project. If deemed a good fit, candidates should submit an Expression of Interest, including a research proposal relevant to the project. Eligible applicants will be invited to apply for PhD candidature and may be selected for a scholarship interview. Starting May 2026, the application process will be updated, and new instructions will be available online. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of biomedical engineering, health informatics, and diabetes care, with a focus on improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Malaysia.
