The University of Minnesota, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Aryan Deshwal, is seeking 1-2 fully funded PhD students to join a research group focused on advancing the foundations of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering design. The group is part of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, which offers a vibrant research environment and access to interdisciplinary collaborations. Research in this group centers on the development of novel AI and ML methodologies with broad applications in science and engineering. Prospective students will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge projects at the intersection of computer science, scientific discovery, and engineering innovation. Applicants should demonstrate strong research potential and hold a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent, preferably in computer science or a closely related field. A master's degree is not required. A strong academic record is expected, with a GPA of 3.45 or higher recommended, though admissions are based on a holistic review. Non-native English speakers must provide recent TOEFL or IELTS scores, with minimum speaking scores required for teaching assistantship eligibility (TOEFL: 23, IELTS: 7). GRE scores are not required or accepted. Funding is available through fellowships, teaching assistantships, or research assistantships, covering tuition and providing a stipend. Applicants who submit by December 15 will be considered for fellowships, while those applying by January 5 may be considered for assistantships. The program admits students for the fall semester only.
