PhD in Early-Life Mucosal Immunology and Oral–Gut Axis Biology

PhD opportunity at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), Braunschweig, Germany. The Early Life Immunity group is recruiting a highly motivated PhD student for a project in early-life mucosal immunology and oral–gut axis biology . The position is part of the international tandem project PERIO-IMPRINT , in collaboration with Prof. Avi-Hai Hovav at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem , studying how maternal periodontitis shapes offspring immune development. The research combines in vivo mouse models , high-dimensional spectral flow cytometry , single-cell RNA-seq / VDJ sequencing , and microbiota and epithelial barrier analyses . This is a strong fit for candidates interested in mucosal immunology , host–microbiota interactions , early-life immunity , and infection biology . Eligibility highlights: a strong interest in the topic is essential; prior experience with mouse work, flow cytometry, or computational analysis is a plus. The post also values curiosity, reliability, and enthusiasm for mechanistic immunology. Funding and duration: PhD position for 3 years initially, paid at 65% E13 TVöD Bund-equivalent . Application window: deadline 15 June 2026 ; start date 1 September 2026 . How to apply: submit your application through the HZI career portal. Informal questions can be sent to Natalia Torow by email.
