Post-doctoral Researcher in Deep Learning (24-month Fixed-term Contract)
IMT Atlantique, a leading French engineering school and part of the Institut Mines-Télécom, is offering a 24-month fixed-term postdoctoral position in deep learning within its Mathematical and Electrical Engineering (MEE) Department. The role is part of the Autonomous Pack project, a collaboration with the packaging tracking start-up GoodFloow, INRIA, and IRCICA, aiming to develop reusable, traceable industrial packaging solutions for manufacturers. The project addresses the growing use of reusable packaging in logistics chains, which offers economic and environmental benefits but lacks real-time monitoring capabilities. The research focuses on developing robust deep learning models embedded in IoT sensors to monitor the state of packaging, merging accelerometer data with additional sensor inputs for improved classification and reliability.
Preliminary work has shown that neural network models using accelerometer data can classify simple events in the packaging life cycle, but these models are not sufficiently robust for real-world deployment. The postdoctoral researcher will synthesize existing literature, adapt solutions to the GoodFloow context, identify relevant sensors, and implement sensor fusion in deep learning models. Research themes include model embeddability and robustness, with opportunities to publish in international journals and conferences. The position offers a friendly working environment in a small, dynamic team, access to a stimulating innovation ecosystem, and collaboration with renowned research organizations and industry partners.
Applicants must have a PhD in machine learning, deep learning, data science, or computer science, obtained within the last three years. Essential skills include Python, neural networks, PyTorch, linear algebra, and statistics. Candidates should be adaptable, autonomous, rigorous, and able to manage priorities, with strong listening, analysis, and synthesis abilities. The position is open to all applicants, with accommodations available for candidates with disabilities.
The contract is a fixed-term (CDD) of 24 months under public law, renewable, and open to civil servants or contract employees. The base salary is 35,800 € gross per year, with public sector benefits such as lower employee social security contributions, partial working from home, collective catering, paid public transport, sustainable mobility package, family supplement, a wide range of social benefits, and numerous vacations. The position is based at the IMT Atlantique Brest campus, France.
