Research Assistant Professor in Southern Studies and Southern Cultures

The Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina is hiring a Research Assistant Professor focused on Southern studies , Southern cultures , and related humanities/social science research and teaching. The post is especially relevant for candidates with expertise in the U.S. South, American South, ethnomusicology, cultural studies, history, anthropology, sociology, and related fields. The successful candidate will teach two courses each fall and spring semester, including Introduction to South Carolina and Introduction to the American South . The role also includes administrative and digital engagement responsibilities: serving as content coordinator, scheduler, and assistant producer for the Institute’s Take on the South podcast; helping expand the Institute’s social media presence; supporting student and community engagement; and helping build interest in the Institute’s Minor in Southern Studies. Eligibility: a PhD in the humanities or social sciences with demonstrable experience teaching the U.S. South is required. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, but the PhD must be completed before the start date. The post specifically encourages recent PhD graduates or ABD candidates nearing completion with expertise in Southern cultures. Funding: this is a full-time temporary faculty appointment with a salary of $70,000 .
