PhD Candidate in Ore Forming Processes in Fen Alkaline-Carbonatitic System Across the Magmatic-Hydrothermal Transition

The Department of Geosciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim invites applications for a PhD Candidate position focused on ore forming processes in the Fen alkaline-carbonatitic system across the magmatic-hydrothermal transition. Ongoing research aims to elucidate the formation processes and distribution of these valuable metals, contributing to a deeper understanding of the interplay between magmatic-hydrothermal activity and mineral resource formation. As global demand for REEs and niobium rises, the Fen Complex is increasingly important for both scientific research and economic exploration. The research will involve studying mineral, melt, and fluid inclusions using state-of-the-art Raman equipment, fluid inclusion micro thermometry, optical and electron microscopy. The candidate will analyze the relationship between REE and high field strength elements (such as Nb and Ta), and the effect of mineralogy on whole-rock composition throughout the Fen complex using SEM-based automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. Trace element composition of minerals, including apatite, carbonates, and oxides, will also be investigated. The candidate is encouraged to further develop the project in collaboration with NTNU's research team. Duties include completing doctoral education, conducting high-quality research, publishing academic and popular science work, participating in the Geology and Geophysics and Mineral Production research groups, engaging in international activities, and teaching optical mineralogy and theory exercises in mineralogy for course TGB4126. The position also involves one year of duty-work related to teaching. Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in mineralogy, igneous/metamorphic petrology, structural geology, ore deposit geology, or equivalent, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master students may apply but must obtain and document their degree before starting the position and no later than August 2026. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale or equivalent. Excellent oral and written English skills and documented training in optical mineralogy are essential. Admission requirements for the faculty's Doctoral Program PhD in Engineering must be met. Preferred qualifications include teaching experience, SEM-based automated mineralogy, electron microscopy data collection and analysis, and interest in REE-HFSE deposits or petrology of carbonatite systems. The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, plus a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is 3 years for doctoral work plus 12 months of career promotion work as teaching. Additional benefits include free Norwegian language training at basic level (A2) and favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
