PhD Position in Electric Field Sensing and Catalysis

The University of Zurich invites applications for a PhD position in Electric Field Sensing and Catalysis within the ERC-funded EFFICACY project, led by Assistant Professor Bogdan Dereka. This opportunity is based at the Irchel Campus in Zurich, Switzerland, in a world-class research building opened in 2022. The project aims to systematically study microscopic electric fields and their role in catalysis, leveraging nature’s strategies for difficult chemical reactions. The research group specializes in advanced ultrafast spectroscopy and is building a new ultrafast laser lab with state-of-the-art equipment and novel laser technology. The successful candidate will work with cutting-edge laser spectroscopy techniques (including 2D IR spectroscopy and femtosecond-to-second transient absorption), tailored molecular probes, electrochemistry, and computer simulations to gain a comprehensive understanding of electrostatic effects on chemical reactivity. The group offers a vibrant, international, and interdisciplinary environment, collaborating with theoretical and experimental research groups worldwide. The position provides opportunities to develop technical expertise, perform complex experiments, and gain soft skills necessary for a scientific career. Career planning and counseling are available, and students are encouraged to present their research at national and international meetings. Zurich offers an exceptional standard of living, making it an attractive location for doctoral studies. Funding for the position is provided by the Swiss National Science Foundation, with a starting salary of 50,404 CHF/year plus 15% social contributions, increasing throughout the PhD trajectory according to preset rates. The group welcomes excellent students from all countries and encourages applications from outstanding candidates regardless of nationality, race, gender, or other personal identities. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field. Essential qualities include academic excellence, motivation, curiosity, independent learning skills, and excellent English communication. Additional expertise in programming, hardware interfacing, spectroscopy, surface science, or electrochemistry is advantageous. Application materials should include a CV, motivation letter/statement of research interests and experience, academic transcripts, and names of at least two references ready to send letters of recommendation (upon request). Applications are considered immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The starting date is flexible and will be determined upon agreement.
