IAC Postdoctoral Fellowship Local Group 2026 – Galaxy Evolution in the Local Group

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in Tenerife is offering a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship for research on Galaxy Evolution in the Local Group, starting September 2026. This position is funded by the project “At the FOrefront of Galactic Archaeology: evolution of the luminous and dark matter components of the Milky Way and Local Group dwarf galaxies in the Gaia ERA” (PID2023-150319NB-C21), led by Prof. Dr. Carme Gallart and Dr. Giuseppina Battaglia. The IAC is renowned for its research in astrophysics, covering areas such as Solar Physics, Exoplanetary Systems, Stellar and Interstellar Physics, the Milky Way and Local Group, Galaxy Formation and Evolution, and Cosmology and Astroparticles, all supported by advanced instrumentation and observatories including the 10.4m GTC. The successful candidate will focus on key research topics including inferences of the dark matter halo properties of Local Group dwarf galaxies, characterization of resolved stellar components, and the accretion history of the Milky Way stellar halo. Applicants with expertise in near-field cosmology and dynamical modeling of Local Group dwarf galaxies are particularly encouraged to apply. The position offers a gross annual salary of 40,313.84 Euros, with social security coverage for spouse/partner and children. Additionally, up to 2,500 Euros is available for documented relocation costs, including travel and accommodation. Eligibility requires a PhD in Astrophysics or Physics by the application deadline (28 May 2026), an excellent research record, and relevant experience. Candidates who obtained their doctorate at the IAC must demonstrate at least one continuous year or 18 accumulated months of complementary training at other research centres. Good English proficiency is required. Applications from women and minorities are strongly encouraged. The selection process includes a merit assessment and an interview, with candidates evaluated on scientific contributions, technical skills, and suitability for the position. Interviews may be conducted in English or Spanish via Zoom. The IAC adheres to the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, and has been recognized for excellence in human resources in research. To apply, submit your application and supporting documents through the IAC online portal by 28 May 2026. For further information, visit the IAC website or contact [email protected]. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a leading research institution and contribute to cutting-edge studies in galaxy evolution and astrophysics.
