PhD Scholarships in Organisational Design and Strategic Adaptability for Megaprojects at University of Sydney

The School of Project Management at the University of Sydney is offering two PhD scholarships focused on 'Designing Megaproject Organisations for Strategic Adaptability.' These positions are supervised by Dr Carolina M. Zani, a researcher with expertise in megaproject management, organisational design, and complex operations. The research aims to address how large-scale engineering projects (such as railways, airports, and power plants) can be managed through temporary organisations that must adapt strategically to continuous change, including political, technological, and regulatory shifts. Dr Zani brings a strong background in industrial engineering, architecture, and health management, with a PhD from University College London and recognition for her research excellence. The project will explore how megaproject organisations can intentionally embed adaptability into their organisational design, considering time-bounded strategies and organisational resilience. The research is interdisciplinary, spanning management, engineering, and strategic planning. Eligibility requires a bachelor degree with first class honours or a master's degree (by research or coursework with a research component) in a related field such as project management, civil engineering, or industrial engineering. Exceptional communication skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include a master's degree in a related field, experience in industry or public-sector collaborations, international work experience, and an interest in interdisciplinary research. The scholarship provides a generous stipend of AUD $42,754 per year (2026 rate) for up to 3.5 years, full tuition coverage (valued at AUD $58,400 per year for international students), a new laptop, and additional financial support of AUD $10,500 for fieldwork, conferences, and research expenses. The School of Project Management offers extensive support for research training and professional development. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and a 1-2 page research proposal via email to [email protected] by 1 February 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be notified of interviews after the deadline, and late applications may be considered until the position is filled. For more details, visit the School of Project Management's LinkedIn page or the University of Sydney's website.
