PhD in Medical Science: Bioinformatics and Human Gut Microbiota at Umeå University
Umeå University is advertising a
PhD position in medical science
with a specialization in
bioinformatics
and
human gut microbiota
. The project is hosted in the
Department of Clinical Microbiology
and is supervised by
Chinmay Dwibedi
, Group Leader at the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and a DDLS Fellow at SciLifeLab.
The research focuses on understanding
strain-level differences in human gut bacteria
and how microbial communities develop in early childhood. The successful candidate will analyze
longitudinal fecal shotgun metagenomic data
from 500 children followed from birth to age three, with the goal of identifying how environmental, clinical, and lifestyle exposures shape microbiome development and adaptive mechanisms in gut bacteria.
This opportunity is especially relevant for applicants interested in
bioinformatics, metagenomics, microbiome research, microbial genomics, strain-level analysis, long-read sequencing, and data-driven life science
. The position is part of the
DDLS PhD research school
, with access to computing resources, training, and networking opportunities across Sweden. The research environment also connects to
MIMS
, the
Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine
, and the
Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR)
.
Eligibility highlights:
at least 240 higher education credits, including 60 advanced-level credits, in natural sciences, life sciences, or engineering; strong English communication skills; ability to work independently and in teams; and strong motivation. Preferred backgrounds include bioinformatics, computational biology, (bio)statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, or related fields, plus programming experience in Python or R and familiarity with UNIX, conda, GitHub packages, and cluster computing.
Funding:
the position is funded via salary through the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS). The appointment is for 4 years, starting by agreement.
Application deadline:
