PhD in Nuclear Myosin VI: DNA Repair and Therapeutic Targeting (BBSRC Yorkshire Bioscience DLA Programme)

This fully funded PhD project, part of the BBSRC Yorkshire Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership (YBDTP), offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the role of the molecular motor myosin VI (MVI) in DNA repair and its potential as a therapeutic target in cancer. Hosted at the University of Sheffield within the School of Medicine and Population Health, the project is supervised by Professor Chris Toseland, Dr Matt Newton, and Professor Klaus Pors, who collectively bring expertise in cancer biophysics, biosciences, and chemical biology. The research aims to understand how MVI contributes to the dynamic reorganisation of chromatin required for transcription and DNA repair, with the goal of identifying new strategies to sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapy and improve patient outcomes. The project employs an interdisciplinary toolkit, including single-molecule localisation microscopy, CRISPR genome editing, protein biochemistry, and in vivo tumour xenografts, providing both mechanistic and translational research training. Students will benefit from world-class facilities, a collaborative and supportive research community, and a vibrant PhD cohort with regular social and professional development events. The YBDTP programme emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and professional skill development, preparing graduates for both academic and non-academic bioscience careers.
