PhD in Hierarchical Control and Optimization of Renewable-Dominated Power Systems
The Automation and Sensorics in Networked Systems (ASN) Group at the University of Kassel, Germany, is recruiting a PhD candidate for a DFG-funded project focused on the hierarchical control of multiscale, renewable-dominated power systems. The ASN Group is a dynamic team with expertise in control engineering, energy systems, and networked systems, aiming to advance future low-carbon energy grids through innovative research in automatic control, artificial intelligence, and complex system modeling.
The PhD project will address distributed and hierarchical model predictive control (MPC), control of nonlinear and multi-timescale systems, resilience under uncertainty, and the modeling of complex power systems. The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining elements of control engineering, optimization, and renewable energy integration. The successful candidate will join a supportive and cooperative research environment, contributing to the development of sustainable energy solutions aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Applicants should have a Master's or diploma degree in electrical engineering, control, cybernetics, applied mathematics, or a related field, with a strong background in automatic control. Enthusiasm for both theoretical and practical research, as well as a collaborative working style, are essential. The position is fully funded for three years (E13 TV-H, full-time) and offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD degree at the University of Kassel.
The application deadline is 2 December 2025, with the position expected to start in early 2026. For more information about the ASN Group and the research environment, visit the group’s website. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in control engineering, distributed control, power systems, optimization, and renewable energy research.
