PhD in DNA Damage, Repair and Mutagenic Chemotherapy at DKFZ/LMU Munich
PhD opportunity in DNA damage, repair, mutagenesis, and cancer genomics
at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), DKTK partner site Munich, in the Cancer Systems Biology lab of Dr. Craig Anderson at the Department of Translational Oncology, LMU Klinikum Munich.
The project focuses on how mutagenic chemotherapy and other DNA-damaging agents shape mutational heterogeneity across the genome and over time. You will investigate the dynamics of DNA damage and repair, mutagenesis, lesion segregation, and the evolution of treatment resistance in cell models and patient-relevant systems. The lab combines molecular biology with advanced statistical and computational analysis, making this a strong fit for candidates interested in cancer genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and cancer genomics.
Research themes and keywords:
DNA damage and repair, mutagenesis, chemotherapy resistance, cancer genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, single-cell sequencing, short-read sequencing, computational and statistical analyses, toxicant exposure, and mechanistic DNA replication/repair.
Eligibility highlights:
Applicants should have an excellent MSc degree in cancer genetics, molecular biology, or a related field. Required experience includes laboratory work, custom sequence library preparation, and mammalian cell culture. The post also asks for strong English communication skills, the ability to work independently, collaborative habits, accurate record keeping, and a safety-conscious attitude. Experience with single-cell sequencing and computational analysis is desirable or can be learned.
Funding and conditions:
The position offers a doctoral salary with usual social benefits, initially for 3 years. Additional benefits include state-of-the-art equipment, international networking, access to research networks, mentoring and training through the DKFZ International PhD Program and DKFZ Career Service, 30 days of vacation, flexible working hours, family-friendly conditions, part-time options, and a subsidized Germany job ticket.
Application window:
The deadline is 2026-07-02. Applicants should submit a CV and a letter of motivation through the official job portal; applications by e-mail are not accepted.
