Engineer/Postdoc Position in Laser Materials Processing at Empa (Materials Science, Optics, Photonics)
The Laboratory for Advanced Materials Processing (LAMP) at Empa, a leading Swiss research institution within the ETH Domain, is seeking an engineer or postdoctoral researcher specializing in laser material processing. The group, led by Dr. Elia Iseli, focuses on innovative functional modification of materials using beam and plasma-induced processing, including laser light and electrons. Research activities span from novel materials development and understanding beam-matter interactions to the integration of AI/ML systems for advanced materials processing and quality assurance.
LAMP offers expertise in additive manufacturing, large-scale laser micro-processing, multiscale modelling, and AI/ML-driven quality monitoring and control. The lab's work results in the creation of novel nanostructured materials, their shape-forming, and integration into devices, contributing to technological advancements and societal well-being.
The position involves R&D-based laser processing, including experimental planning, setup, measurements, and analysis. Responsibilities also include conceptualizing and realizing novel hardware and optical setups, as well as software development for data acquisition and system communication. Candidates should have a degree in optics, photonics, engineering, or a related field, with experience in ultra-fast laser processing and skills in R&D manufacturing, software development, and hardware integration. Proficiency in English is required; knowledge of French and German is advantageous.
Empa provides a dynamic and inspiring research environment at its Thun campus near Bern, with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment. The position is initially for one year, starting in May/June 2026, with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team with strong national and international collaborations and will be supported in publishing high-impact research and pursuing professional development.
Applications must be submitted online via the Empa job portal, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons. Applications by email or post are not accepted.
