Postdoctoral Position in Thermal Sciences, Energy Technology, Building Physics and Nuclear Engineering (Prof. Francesco Patuzzi)
The Free University of Bozen - Bolzano invites applications for a postdoctoral position in thermal sciences, energy technology, building physics, and nuclear engineering, supervised by Professor Francesco Patuzzi. This opportunity is part of the BioRevolut project, which aims to revolutionize the use of lignocellulosic biomass for a sustainable Alpine ecosystem. The research focuses on two main areas: first, the identification and thorough characterization of lignocellulosic biomasses available in mountain regions, including agricultural and forestry residues. Representative samples will be selected with partner support and analyzed using physico-chemical methods such as CHNS and TGA to assess their suitability for valorisation.
Second, the project adopts an integrated biomass valorisation approach, concentrating on the lignin fraction dissolved in black liquor. The postdoctoral researcher will develop and validate continuous thermochemical hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) processes, assess feedstock rheology and thermal stability (DSC/TGA), optimize operating conditions, and analyze product streams (biocrude, aqueous phase, char, and gas) using CHNS, TGA, and GC MS. The ultimate goal is to produce replicable guidelines to support technology transfer and sustainable energy solutions in the Alpine region.
The position is based at the Free University of Bozen - Bolzano, Italy, and offers a collaborative research environment with access to advanced analytical facilities. Applicants should hold a PhD in chemical engineering, energy technology, or a related discipline, and possess experience in thermochemical processes, biomass valorisation, and relevant analytical techniques. The application deadline is July 1, 2026, at 12:00 PM (noon). Interested candidates should submit their applications and publications online via the official application portal.
