PhD Position: Integrating Mesoscale Membrane Dynamics into the Analysis of Lipid Vesicles

This PhD position at the University of Graz, in collaboration with the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, offers a unique opportunity to advance the understanding of membrane biophysics through the integration of mesoscale membrane dynamics into the analysis of lipid vesicles. Lipid vesicles serve as essential model systems for both membrane biophysics and drug delivery research, yet conventional small-angle scattering (SANS/SAXS) techniques often fail to capture the critical mesoscale dynamics that govern membrane function. The successful candidate will develop a multiscale scattering model that bridges nanoscopic and mesoscopic structure and dynamics. This involves rigorous mathematical modeling to create predictive tools spanning orders of magnitude in length and time, hands-on numerical modeling using advanced optimization routines, and experimental validation with SANS, SAXS, and neutron-spin-echo (NSE) measurements on ILL beamlines. The project also includes the release of a fully documented, community-ready open-source software package, which will serve as a reference for researchers worldwide. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, situated at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology. The position is full-time for three years, with the first year based at the University of Graz and the remaining two years at ILL in France. The candidate will enroll in the PhD program at the University of Graz and benefit from early integration into the research environment at ILL, fostering collaboration and skill development in cutting-edge experimental techniques, advanced scattering modeling, and open-source software development. Applicants must have an MSc or equivalent in Physics, Chemical Physics, or related fields, with strong skills in mathematics, statistical analysis, numerical modeling, and optimization. Experience with scattering techniques (SANS/SAXS), data modeling, programming (Python), and familiarity with membrane biophysics or soft matter physics are advantageous. Excellent English communication skills, scientific commitment, creativity, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, copies of MSc diplomas and transcripts, and up to two letters of recommendation in PDF format via email to Dr. Enrico F. Semeraro, Prof. Georg Pabst, and Dr. Sylvain Prévost. The application deadline is April 6, 2026. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
