PhD Student (gn) in Neuro-Immunology – Brain Border Immunology and CSF/Meningeal Leukocyte Analysis

The University Hospital Münster (UKM) is offering a fixed-term, part-time (65%) PhD position in the Department of Neurology, under the supervision of Prof. Gerd Meyer zu Hörste. The research group specializes in neuro-immunology, combining basic experimental models with patient-derived specimens and utilizing cutting-edge technologies to advance the understanding of human neuro-immunology. The focus is on the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and meningeal leukocytes, employing multi-dimensional flow cytometry, single-cell and single-nucleus transcriptomics, and animal models. The group has a long-standing interest in mechanisms of brain border immunology, integrating with the Biology in Context Core Unit and referencing relevant publications (PubMed IDs 38750052, 33382973). Responsibilities include conducting research on the immunological mechanisms at the brain borders, particularly involving CSF and meninges. Applied methods are multi-dimensional flow cytometry, animal models, and advanced transcriptomics techniques. The position offers integration with interdisciplinary research units and access to state-of-the-art facilities. Applicants should have hands-on experience in cellular immunology, especially with multi-dimensional flow cytometry and/or cell sorting. Experience with single cell or spatial transcriptomics is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate motivation, willingness to learn, team spirit, responsibility, organizational skills, reliability, flexibility, and strong English communication skills. German language proficiency is not required. This is a wet-lab position; applicants with only (bio)informatics backgrounds will not be considered. The position is funded according to the TV-L E13 tariff agreement, with extra annual payment, company pension plan (VBL), 30 days of vacation per year, two additional days off, and a wide range of training and professional development opportunities. Additional benefits include sports programs, job ticket, company events, cafeteria, and emergency childcare. The work environment is respectful, appreciative, and diverse, with support for health and work-life balance. Applications are accepted via the UKM career portal until 01 April 2026. For further information or inquiries, contact Prof. Gerd Meyer zu Hörste at the provided email address. Interested candidates should prepare their application materials emphasizing relevant immunology and wet-lab experience and follow the application link for submission.
