PhD in GenAI Tools for Thought, Human-Centered AI, and Cognitive Support Systems
PhD opening at Sorbonne Université / ISIR
in
GenAI tools for thought
,
human-centered AI
,
human-computer interaction
, and
cognitive support systems
.
The project is hosted at
ISIR (Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique)
, Sorbonne Université, in Paris, and is supervised by
Gonzalo Ramos
and
Baptiste Caramiaux
. It explores how generative AI can be designed not as a cognitive surrogate, but as a
cognitive substrate
that extends reasoning, preserves human agency, and supports metacognition and skill development.
Research topics include
GenAI
,
tools for thought
,
interactive systems
,
reasoning
,
metacognition
,
cognitive science
, and
human-centered AI
. The project combines system design and engineering, algorithmic investigation, and empirical studies. It aims to produce interactive prototypes, design principles, and evaluation frameworks that measure reasoning quality and learning trajectories rather than only output quality.
Eligibility highlights:
a master’s degree in computer science, HCI, AI, or cognitive science; experience building interactive systems; familiarity with qualitative and/or quantitative HCI methods; and strong English writing skills. Experience with GenAI or language models is a plus.
Funding:
3-year funded doctoral position (contrat doctoral, EDITE ED-130 competition), starting
October 2026
, based in Paris. The working language of the lab and supervision is English.
Deadline:
applications are open until
