PhD and Postdoc Positions in Intelligent Language Systems, Machine Learning, and NLP at FAU Erlangen–Nürnberg
The Chair of Intelligent Language Systems at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is inviting applications for fully funded PhD and postdoctoral positions in the fields of Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and computational linguistics. The research focus includes reasoning, interpretability, neuro-symbolic methods, memory, and multilinguality, with the overarching goal of advancing large language and vision-language models (LLM/VLMs) for underrepresented languages, tasks, and domains. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop novel ML/NLP/RL methods and enjoy a degree of research freedom within the scope of the lab's objectives.
Applicants for the postdoctoral position must hold a PhD in computer science, computational linguistics, or a related field, while PhD applicants should have a relevant master's degree before the start date. A strong background in NLP and ML, excellent programming skills, and proficiency in English are required. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team is essential. The positions are fully funded at the E13 level (100%), with salary details available via the provided calculator. The lab offers access to FAU's high-performance computing (HPC) center, which features powerful GPU clusters for advanced research.
To apply, candidates should prepare a single PDF containing a cover letter (max one page), a research statement (up to two pages), a CV (including publication list if available), diplomas, transcripts, and contact details for two referees. Applications should be sent to [email protected] by March 1, 2026, for full consideration, though the positions will remain open until filled. The preferred starting date is May 1, 2026, or soon after. This is an excellent opportunity for researchers interested in cutting-edge NLP, ML, and computational linguistics to join a dynamic and well-resourced team at a leading German university.
