PhD Position in Economics: Domestic Forest Governance and Global Timber Markets – Policy Impact Assessment
Linnaeus University, located in Växjö, Sweden, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Economics, affiliated with the research project "Domestic Forest Governance and Global Timber Markets: A Policy Impact Assessment." This project, funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation and part of the WiForce research program, explores the intersection of climate policy, international trade, and environmental and natural resource economics. The research aims to analyze how forest policy instruments impact climate outcomes, focusing on the phenomenon of forest harvest leakage—where reduced timber harvesting in one country leads to increased harvesting elsewhere, potentially offsetting climate benefits.
The successful candidate will investigate how policies designed to enhance carbon sequestration in forests influence harvesting levels, trade flows, and market dynamics. The research involves working with large international datasets, applying quantitative and empirical methods, and developing scenario models to evaluate alternative policy interventions and their effects on climate and the bioeconomy. The dissertation will be written as a compilation of scientific papers, and the position offers opportunities for international collaboration, conference participation, and publication in leading academic journals.
The doctoral program consists of four years of full-time study, with coursework conducted in collaboration with other Swedish universities. Courses include mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and electives related to the dissertation topic. The candidate may also engage in teaching and departmental duties up to 20% of full time. Graduates are prepared for international academic careers and analytical positions in government agencies, international organizations, and the private sector.
Entry requirements include a Master’s degree in Economics or at least 240 ECTS credits (with 60 at the advanced level), and at least 90 ECTS credits in Economics or equivalent. Strong proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required. Selection is based on academic performance, quality of Master’s thesis, quantitative and analytical skills, motivation, research interests, and ability to work independently and collaboratively. GRE test results are highly recommended, and TOEFL or IELTS results are recommended for applicants whose native language is not English.
The position is fully funded, with salary provided according to Linnaeus University’s doctoral employment agreement. The university values diversity and gender balance and holds the HR Excellence in Research award. The application deadline is June 15, 2026. Applicants must submit a CV, cover letter, relevant essay, grades, certificates, and a proposed research plan, all marked with the reference number HR-2026/552. Applications should be submitted online via the provided link, and all documents must be received by 23:59 local time on the closing day.
