PhD position in MSCA doctoral network iSTRIDE: Characterization and Exploitation of Microbial Interactions in CAUTI Biofilms

The KU Leuven is offering a fully funded PhD position within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) project iSTRIDE, focusing on the characterization and exploitation of microbial interactions in CAUTI biofilms. The iSTRIDE consortium unites leading academic and industrial partners to address the challenges of Indwelling Device Associated Infections (IDAIs), integrating expertise from six hospitals, one research institute, seven universities, and two industrial partners. The project aims to deepen understanding of IDAIs and develop innovative diagnostic tools and antimicrobial coatings. As a doctoral candidate in the iSTRIDE network, you will benefit from advanced training, interdisciplinary collaborations, and secondments to partner institutions. The research will be conducted at the interface of microbiology and bioinformatics, with a focus on: Characterizing the composition and pathogenicity of polymicrobial biofilms in CAUTI Identifying novel targets for CAUTI treatment Discovering drug candidates that interfere with microbial interactions in CAUTI biofilms Assessing the cytotoxicity of novel drugs The position is offered for 48 months, with the starting date to be agreed upon recruitment. All doctoral candidates in the iSTRIDE network will complete a hospital internship during their first year, gaining early exposure to clinical environments and real-world healthcare challenges. The primary academic advisor is Prof. Dr. Hans Steenackers, with additional mentorship during secondments at collaborating institutions such as UGent, UKR, and UL. Applicants must hold an M.Sc. diploma (120 ECTS points) or equivalent in microbiology, bioscience engineering, or bioinformatics. Essential skills include analytic and quantitative abilities, laboratory-based experimentation, and scientific writing. Experience with metagenomics and metatranscriptomics is advantageous. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required, along with strong interpersonal skills, the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment, and willingness to spend time at partner universities. Candidates must not have been awarded a PhD and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months within the last 3 years. Researchers of any nationality are eligible. The iSTRIDE programme offers network-wide training activities, structured workshops, and research secondments, facilitating technical and project-specific excellence as well as transferable skills for diverse career paths. After completing the program, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the research-to-innovation process and a strong international network. KU Leuven is committed to an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity and equal opportunity. Applications are accepted exclusively through the KU Leuven website. Please submit a letter of motivation, CV, electronic copies of academic diplomas and certificates, and contact details of two references. For further information, contact Dr. Ines Thiers ([email protected]) or Prof. Dr. Hans Steenackers ([email protected]). Application deadline: 30 June 2026.

KU Leuven

PhD position in MSCA doctoral network iSTRIDE

KU Leuven invites applications for a fully funded PhD position within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) project iSTRIDE, focusing on the pathology and prevention of Indwelling Device Associated Infections (IDAIs). The iSTRIDE consortium unites leading academic and industrial partners, including six hospitals, one research institute, seven universities, and two industrial partners, to advance research in microbiology, materials science, and diagnostic technology. The project aims to deepen understanding of IDAIs and develop innovative diagnostic tools and antimicrobial coatings. As a doctoral candidate (DC01) at KU Leuven, you will contribute to the development of sustainable anti-biofilm compounds and materials for implant-related infections. Your research will involve optimizing in vitro models for IDAIs, developing nano-patterned surfaces for antimicrobial activity, evaluating anti-biofilm compounds and coatings, and assessing resistance development against these coatings. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of microbiology and materials science, with interdisciplinary collaborations and planned secondments to partner institutions such as Sirris, UMFT, and UPorto. All doctoral candidates in iSTRIDE will complete a hospital internship during their first year, gaining early exposure to clinical environments and real-world healthcare challenges. The program emphasizes translational skills for careers in biomedical research and medical technology innovation, delivered through cross-institutional collaboration, industry engagement, structured workshops, and research secondments. Applicants must hold an M.Sc. diploma (120 ECTS points) or equivalent in microbiology or bioscience engineering. Essential skills include analytic and quantitative abilities, laboratory-based experimentation, and scientific writing. Experience in experimental evolution and a background in material science are advantageous. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required, along with strong interpersonal skills, the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment, and willingness to spend time at partner universities. Eligibility criteria include not having been awarded a PhD and not having resided or carried out main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months within the last 3 years. The position is offered for 48 months, with the starting date to be agreed upon recruitment.
