PhD Position in Liver Immune Regulation, Immunology, and Biomedicine at Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf

A new PhD position is available in the Junior Research Group of Hao Huang, PhD, within the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1700, focusing on immune regulation in the liver at Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Germany. The research aims to understand the mechanisms of hepatic immune regulation, particularly the development of tolerance or immune activation, by integrating analyses of human liver biopsies and advanced mouse models. The project will dissect the ontogeny and functional specialization of hepatic macrophage populations in liver diseases such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis. The successful candidate will conduct and analyze complex experimental studies, apply and develop advanced techniques in immunology and cell biology, and collaborate within CRC1700 and with international partners. Responsibilities include presenting research findings, preparing research articles, contributing to peer review, and supervising students. Applicants must hold a Master of Science in a relevant life science field and have hands-on experience or strong interest in flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, cell culture, animal experimentation, or bioinformatics. Proficiency in English and good communication skills are required. The position is part-time (65%), funded according to TVöD/VKA, and runs from February 2026 to January 2029. Structured doctoral training is provided through the CRC 1700 and the Hamburg School for Immunity and Infection (HSII), with opportunities for further training and international collaboration. The UKE offers a supportive, diverse, and family-friendly work environment, with additional benefits such as travel subsidies and wellness programs. The application deadline is November 30, 2025. Applicants must provide proof of immunization or immunity against measles before employment. For more information and to apply, visit the UKE career portal or contact the CRC 1700 department.
