Doctoral Scholarship in Contemporary Anglophone Literature: Narrating Parental Regret
The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in contemporary anglophone literature, focusing on the project 'Narrating Parental Regret in Contemporary Anglophone Fiction.' This research will explore how literary narratives since 1990 represent parental regret, examining narrative techniques that shape negative emotions central to family life, reproductive decision-making, and wellbeing. The project employs close reading to analyze counterfactual temporalities, focalization, and other narrative strategies, considering differences across gender, race, class, sexuality, and life stage. Drawing on narrative theory, affect theory, gender studies, and health humanities, the research aims to reveal how fiction articulates the complexity of regret and the tensions between autonomy and dependence within families.
As a doctoral researcher, you will prepare and defend a PhD dissertation, publish research articles, and present at conferences. You will also undertake limited teaching and research support tasks within the Department of Literature, particularly in English literature. The position is based at the University of Antwerp’s city campus, offering a dynamic and stimulating academic environment with access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in English literature or a closely related field by the start date, demonstrate excellent academic results, and possess high proficiency in English. Experience in independent research and academic writing is required, while international contacts in anglophone countries and interdisciplinary research experience are advantageous. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively, work well in teams, and balance independent and collaborative tasks.
The scholarship is initially awarded for one year and may be renewed for up to three additional years following a positive evaluation. The monthly stipend is calculated according to university rates and includes ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs.
