Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy and Medical Ethics (DIME Project)

Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in philosophy and medical ethics, joining the ERC-funded DIME project, "Disruptive innovation in healthcare requires disruptive innovation in medical ethics." The position is based in the Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of ethics, healthcare, and innovation. The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Heidi Mertes, another postdoctoral researcher, and two PhD students, within the Bioethics Institute Ghent and the METAMEDICA platform. The DIME project investigates how recent medical innovations—such as healthcare apps, direct-to-consumer genetic testing, telehealth, electronic patient records, and advanced clinical decision support systems—challenge traditional concepts of medicine and the doctor-patient relationship. These disruptive technologies raise critical questions about the adequacy of current medical ethics frameworks to address new risks and opportunities, including patient autonomy, confidentiality, privacy, and the duty of care. The project aims to identify areas where ethical principles require reorientation, develop normative arguments for adapting or replacing existing procedures and theories, and analyze shifting moral responsibilities in healthcare. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will focus on synthesizing the scientific output of the project into a final, coherent deliverable—an open access book—and assist in organizing the project's concluding conference. At least 85% of your assignment will be dedicated to academic research, with additional responsibilities supporting workshops and meetings for the DIME project and METAMEDICA platform. Eligibility requirements include a thesis-based doctorate in Moral Sciences, Philosophy, or an equivalent discipline, with a strong publication record and demonstrated expertise in medical ethics. Candidates must possess excellent English communication skills, strong analytical abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience in organizing academic events is desirable. Applicants with foreign diplomas must provide translations if the documents are not in Dutch, French, German, or English. The position is offered as a part-time (50%) contract for six months, starting as early as February 1, 2026, with remuneration according to salary scale PD1 to PD4. Ghent University provides a stimulating research environment and a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Applications must be submitted online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system by January 19, 2026. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged as one PDF), a cover letter, and a transcript of the required degree. Translations are necessary for diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English. Late or email applications will not be considered.
