Postdoc in eDNA Metagenomics and Bioinformatics for Marine Biodiversity Monitoring

The Gante lab at KU Leuven is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the VLAIO-funded eDNA-OPTIMA project, which aims to advance marine biodiversity monitoring through innovative environmental DNA (eDNA) metagenomics and bioinformatics approaches. The research group, led by Prof. dr. Hugo Gante, specializes in eco-evo-devo and fish conservation, with a strong emphasis on eDNA applications and workflow development. This postdoc position centers on the computational analysis of eDNA metagenomic datasets, particularly those targeting macroscopic eukaryotes in marine environments such as the North Sea. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and optimizing bioinformatics workflows for taxonomic assignment, comparative genomics, and community composition analysis. Collaboration is key, as the role involves working closely with marine ecologists, hydrodynamic modelers, and industry partners to integrate experimental design, data analysis, and modeling approaches. The eDNA-OPTIMA project addresses critical challenges in marine biodiversity monitoring, including minimizing false positives and negatives in species detection by studying eDNA dynamics such as transport, degradation, and resuspension. Advanced bioinformatics and hydrodynamic modeling are integrated to improve the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of eDNA-based monitoring, with a particular focus on benthic and pelagic taxa that are difficult to assess using traditional methods. Applicants should hold a PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, or a related discipline, and demonstrate a strong track record in eDNA metagenomics, comparative genomics, and/or bioinformatics. Essential skills include proficiency in programming (bash, Python, R) and experience with high-throughput sequencing data analysis. Familiarity with the VSC and marine ecological data integration is advantageous. The position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team. Funding for this postdoctoral role is provided by VLAIO, covering salary and research activities within the eDNA-OPTIMA project. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of automated eDNA sampling systems and standardized protocols for large-scale marine biodiversity monitoring. KU Leuven is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and diverse research environment. The application deadline is December 19, 2025. Interested candidates should apply via the KU Leuven job portal and may contact Prof. dr. Hugo Gante for further information at [email protected].
