PhD Candidate in Quantum Chemistry – Electronic Structure Methods and Molecular Response Theory
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in quantum chemistry, focusing on the development of advanced electronic structure methods within molecular response theory for molecules on surfaces and under non-equilibrium conditions. The research aims to develop models describing electronic charge transfer and its effects on molecular properties, with a particular emphasis on photoexcited states. The successful candidate will join the eT program developer team and contribute to the implementation of new models within this framework.
This PhD position is part of the European Research Council (ERC) funded Consolidator Grant, OpenQuantum, offering the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic research group. The Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Science at NTNU is renowned for its research in environmental chemistry, cancer research, and applied theoretical chemistry, providing a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary research and professional growth.
Eligibility:
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, or a closely related field, with a strong academic record (B or better on the NTNU scale or equivalent). A solid background in electronic wave function theory for molecules is required. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in English and meet the requirements for admission to NTNU’s Doctoral Programme in Chemistry. Preferred qualifications include expertise in physical chemistry, nanoscience, material science, or physics, a strong mathematical background, and some programming experience. Personal qualities such as independence, motivation, and adaptability are highly valued.
Funding:
The position offers a gross annual salary of approximately NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years, and the position is fully funded by the ERC OpenQuantum grant. Additional benefits include career guidance, a mentor program, and access to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
Application Process:
Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by 10 April 2026. Required documents include transcripts and diplomas, CV, a copy or draft of the Master’s thesis, a brief motivation letter, and contact information for three referees. All documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language. Only complete applications received by the deadline will be considered.
NTNU is committed to diversity and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The university offers a supportive and inclusive working environment in Trondheim, a vibrant city known for its rich cultural scene and high quality of life.
