Doctoral Scholarship in Thermal Energy System Optimization
The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of thermal energy system optimization within the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, Faculty of Applied Engineering. This PhD position is part of a collaborative research project with Ghent University and KU Leuven, focusing on the implementation of high-temperature heat pumps in industrial chemical batch processes. The research aims to optimize the integration of heat pumps in industrial processes, considering transient heating and cooling demands, and to develop methodologies for integration architecture, component sizing, and control strategies.
As a doctoral researcher, you will prepare and defend a PhD thesis, contribute to ongoing research projects, and participate in academic activities. You will design a research plan in consultation with your supervisor, Prof. Ilya T’Jollyn, and report progress to supervisors and committees. The role includes presenting at scientific conferences, aiming for publication in scientific journals, and supporting teaching or research management tasks within the EMIB (Energy and Materials in Infrastructure and Buildings) research group.
Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a master’s degree in Electromechanical or Chemical Engineering (or similar) by the time of appointment, with evidence of excellent academic performance. Experience in analysis and modelling of thermal energy systems is advantageous. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required, along with teaching and research competences aligned with university standards. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, creativity, teamwork, and the ability to work independently.
The scholarship is offered for one year, renewable up to four years following positive evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is determined by university rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs. Doctoral researchers have access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School. The main workplace is Campus Groenenborger, providing a dynamic and stimulating environment.
The planned start date is 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 9 July 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter and CV. The selection committee will review applications after the deadline and notify candidates regarding next steps. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, contact Prof. Ilya T’Jollyn at [email protected].
The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The institution has received the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and offers a family-friendly, growth-oriented work environment.
