PhD Position in Biomimetic Polymeric Receptor-based Sensor Systems
This PhD position at Tallinn University of Technology focuses on the development of biomimetic polymeric receptor-based sensor systems for the study and monitoring of wellbeing states, particularly stress. The project aims to create innovative point-of-care (PoC) sensing devices utilizing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as robust, low-cost biomimetic receptors for non-invasive detection of biomarkers in biological fluids such as sweat, saliva, and urine. By addressing the limitations of current diagnostic methods, including poor performance in complex samples and reliance on labile biological receptors, the research seeks to deliver affordable and accurate analytical tools for real-world applications.
The research objectives include the rational design and synthesis of MIPs selective for stress-related biomarkers, especially cortisol, and their integration into portable sensor platforms with electrochemical transduction. The project also involves developing data-processing strategies for reliable interpretation of sensor signals. Responsibilities encompass experimental research, computational modelling, spectroscopic analysis, literature review, optimization of polymerization and template removal procedures, sensor integration, and analytical performance evaluation in relevant biological media. Collaboration with internal and external partners, presentation of research results, and preparation of scientific reports and publications are integral parts of the role.
Applicants must have an MSc degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials science, or a related field, with excellent English proficiency (Level B2 or higher), strong writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Practical experience in polymer synthesis, electrochemistry, and biosensor development or characterization is highly valued. Additional beneficial skills include programming (MATLAB/Python), data analysis and graphing (Origin), knowledge of electrochemical methods, and familiarity with machine learning approaches. Candidates are required to submit a tentative research plan that expands on the listed research questions and tasks, avoiding AI-generated text. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview and must present their previous scientific work and research experience.
The position offers a fully funded PhD with a gross monthly salary of at least EUR 2300, depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will work in the Laboratory of Biofunctional Materials within the Department of Materials and Environmental Technology, part of the TalTech School of Engineering. The laboratory specializes in the design and synthesis of smart sensing functional materials, including MIP-based sensors for environmental protection and medical diagnostics. TalTech is a leading institution in Estonia, known for its multidisciplinary research environment and strong international collaborations.
