Fully Funded PhD Positions in Infrastructure Materials, Energy Resource Recovery, Waste Valorization, Wastewater Treatment, and AI in Manufacturing at University of Michigan
The ARTIST Lab at the University of Michigan, led by Assistant Professor Jiaqi Li, is recruiting fully funded PhD students to begin in August 2026. The lab focuses on cutting-edge research in infrastructure materials, energy resource recovery, waste valorization, wastewater treatment, and the application of artificial intelligence in manufacturing. Students will have the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects that span carbon capture, clean energy storage, electrochemistry, geochemistry, materials discovery, sustainable construction materials, machine learning for manufacturing automation, resource recovery, circular economy materials, and geomaterials for geological applications.
PhD students in the ARTIST Lab will collaborate with national laboratories and industry partners, gaining exposure to innovative research and practical applications. The lab encourages applicants with backgrounds in engineering, materials science, environmental science, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, and mechanical engineering. The positions are fully funded, including tuition coverage and a stipend, with the application fee waived for domestic applicants.
To apply, candidates should submit their applications by December 15, 2025, through the Rackham Graduate School portal and indicate their interest in joining Professor Jiaqi Li's research team. For more information about the lab, visit
