John Rand

The University of Copenhagen offers a Master of Science (MSc) in Global Development, designed for students interested in understanding and addressing the complexities of globalization and development, particularly in the Global South. The program is led by Professor John Rand, Head of Studies for Global Development, and is housed within the Department of Economics. It attracts a diverse, international cohort, fostering a rich learning environment with multiple cultural perspectives. The curriculum covers a broad range of topics including international development, social sciences, economics, environmental studies, and global politics. Students will gain analytical skills to navigate and address global challenges, with a strong emphasis on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The program frequently uses statistical software such as Stata, and students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with it prior to starting. Admission requires a qualifying bachelor's degree in anthropology, economics, geography, geoinformatics, natural resources, political science, public health, sociology, or urban, energy and environmental planning. The degree must include at least 15 ECTS credits in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods within the social sciences. Applicants must also demonstrate English proficiency at least equivalent to Danish upper secondary school 'English level B.' Degrees in communication, journalism, language studies, psychology, tourism, art, social work, science, engineering, design, public relations, pharmacy, law, and most humanities do not qualify unless at least half the credits are in social sciences. A written description of how the research methods requirement is met is required as part of the application. The program is not fully funded. Students are responsible for tuition fees (especially non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens) and a mandatory field trip costing approximately 15,000–18,000 DKK, for which no travel scholarships are available. The application portal is open from 16 January to 1 March 2026 for EU applicants, and from 15 November to 15 January for non-EU applicants. The study program begins in September 2026.
