Creating supplementary cementitious materials from recycled concrete fines
This postdoctoral position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on advancing the global adoption of concrete upcycling processes to address the significant CO2 emissions associated with traditional concrete production. The project centers on developing supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) from recycled concrete fines (RCFs), particularly those sourced from construction and demolition waste. As conventional SCMs like fly ash and slag become less available, the research explores new alternatives, including RCFs treated to enhance their performance and blends with other mineral residues such as dredged sediments and excavation waste. The aim is to produce high-quality, durable, and sustainable SCMs suitable for construction applications. The successful candidate will join the Building Materials Group, a dynamic research team comprising 25 PhDs, 3 postdocs, 2 assistant professors, 1 associate professor, and 1.4 full professors. The group specializes in sustainable and circular building materials synthesized from secondary raw materials, investigating their chemical, physical, and aesthetic properties, as well as added functionalities like fire resistance, air purification, self-cleaning, high performance, and hydrophobicity. Research activities include experimental observations and modeling, with a strong emphasis on durability and sustainability, particularly the degradation and leaching of materials in aggressive environments. The group benefits from a state-of-the-art laboratory for material treatment, testing, and recycling, and collaborates closely with the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, as well as industry partners and international researchers. The position offers full-time employment for two years, a competitive salary, bonuses, training opportunities, and comprehensive support for international candidates. Applicants should have a PhD in civil engineering, chemistry, mineralogy, or a related field, with a proven track record in academic research, project management, and team collaboration. Excellent English proficiency and leadership skills are essential. The application process requires a cover letter, CV with publications and references, and a selection of best publications. The vacancy remains open until filled, with applications screened promptly.
