PhD position in Biology, specialisation in Aquatic Ecology, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU Aqua) in Stockholm/Drottningholm. The project focuses on the management and conservation of critically endangered fishes, with a particular emphasis on Anguillid eels and the restocking/reintroduction of European eel. The research will address key knowledge gaps using laboratory experiments, field studies, long-term data analysis, and systematic mapping. Core topics include behavioural and physiological differences between naturally recruited and imported eel, migratory behaviour and mortality, and the long-term effects of restocking in freshwater and coastal ecosystems. The project also aims to produce a systematic evidence map and open database on restocking of European and Japanese eel. The position is based at the Institute of Freshwater Research (SLU Aqua) in Stockholm, with work also taking place at the field station Kristineberg and at field sites for tracking migratory behaviour. The doctoral student will conduct experiments on live animals, including handling and maintenance of eels, behavioural and physiological experiments, tagging, and tracking. The project includes close collaboration with Professor Fredrik Jutfelt (University of Gothenburg) and Professor Anders Nilsson (Lund University), plus a wider international network. Eligibility requires a Master’s degree or equivalent, at least 90 HEC in biology-related subjects including a degree project and at least 30 HEC at second-cycle level, and English proficiency equivalent to Engelska B/6. Preferred experience includes animal experiments, fieldwork, practical and statistical methods, independent writing, collaboration, and communication skills. Fish experience is helpful but not required; systematic mapping, large long-term datasets, and a driver’s licence are meriting. This is a fully funded 4-year doctoral student appointment with salary according to the local collective agreement and fixed salary progression. The application deadline is 2026-07-06.
