Postdoc Position: Affective Neuroscience and Computational Psychiatry at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging

This postdoctoral position at Radboud University’s Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging offers a unique opportunity to join the ERC-funded HEART2ADAPT project, focusing on affective neuroscience and computational psychiatry. The project investigates how people make approach–avoidance decisions under threat, aiming to understand why some individuals remain calm and flexible under pressure while others freeze or flee. The research centers on neurocomputational models of adaptive learning, exploring how the body’s autonomic stress state—balancing sympathetic and parasympathetic activity—shapes responses to danger and guides adaptation in dynamic environments. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to task development and the modelling of behavioural and neural data, using advanced tools to track brain and body activity in real time, including heart rate, posture, and neuroimaging techniques such as MEG and fMRI. The project also involves testing causal mechanisms through pharmacological interventions and transcranial ultrasound stimulation. Subsequent phases will examine alterations in anxiety patients and apply interventions to probe underlying mechanisms. The position is embedded in the Affective Neuroscience group led by Prof Karin Roelofs at the Faculty of Social Sciences, with close collaboration between the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) and the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (DCCN). The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, with strong connections across psychology, communication science, and educational science, and offers state-of-the-art facilities for observational studies, experiments, eye-tracking, EEG, GSR, and behavioural measurements in both real and virtual environments. Radboud University provides excellent employment conditions, including a four-year temporary contract, a gross monthly salary ranging from €4,728 to €6,433, an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% end-of-year bonus, extra days off, flexible annual leave options, a pension plan, sports and cultural discounts, and various training and development schemes. The university is committed to fostering an inclusive and collaborative research culture, supporting staff in their professional growth and ambitions. Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field (cognitive or affective neuroscience, computational psychiatry, human decision sciences), have experience in probabilistic and/or other modelling approaches to decision making, and possess proven expertise in neuroimaging techniques (preferably MEG and/or fMRI). Interest in psychophysiological threat states and autonomic changes in anxiety patients is expected, along with strong social, communication, and organisational skills. Experience in human psychophysiology and supervising students is advantageous. The application deadline is 24 March 2026. Interviews will be held in April 2026, with a preferred start date of 1 June 2026. Applications must be submitted online via the provided link, addressed to Prof Karin Roelofs, and include all required documents as specified in the application form. The Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging is internationally renowned for its multidisciplinary research environment, hosting over 100 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers from more than 25 countries, and is equipped with cutting-edge neuroimaging and computational facilities.

PhD Position: Designing Virtual Reality Biofeedback for Enhanced Emotion Regulation in Police and Youth

This PhD position at Radboud University offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the CONTEXT project, a nation-wide Dutch collaboration funded by the NWO National Science Agenda. The project aims to improve emotion regulation in groups regularly exposed to stressors, such as police officers and youth, by developing personalised biofeedback methods and virtual reality interventions. As a PhD candidate, you will refine and validate a virtual reality biofeedback game, collaborate with stakeholders, end-users, and game designers, and work closely with the CONTEXT science team. Your tasks include user-interaction testing, psychophysiological data collection and analysis (e.g., heart rate variability), optimisation of biofeedback algorithms, and participation in large-scale efficacy trials. You will also interact with work packages focusing on neuroimaging, ecological momentary and physiological assessments, theory, ethics, and societal impact. The position is hosted at Radboud University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, within the Experimental Psychopathology and Treatment department of the Behavioural Science Institute. The CONTEXT consortium brings together 13 leading researchers from eight academic institutions, including Radboud University, Erasmus University, Amsterdam UMC, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University, and the University of Humanistic Studies. The project collaborates with over twenty societal partners, such as the Police Academy, youth organisations, healthcare providers, and governmental bodies, ensuring that research translates into practical interventions that strengthen resilience and wellbeing in society. Radboud University offers a supportive and inclusive research environment, with excellent facilities, strong interdisciplinary collaborations, and a commitment to open science and team science. The PhD track allows you to dedicate 10% of your time to teaching in the psychology curriculum, helping you build your teaching portfolio. Employment conditions include a temporary contract (1.0 FTE) for 1.5 years, extendable to 4 years upon positive evaluation, a gross monthly salary of €3,059–€3,881, 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, extra days off (30 or 41 annual leave days), flexible working hours, pension plan, sports and cultural discounts, and various training and development schemes. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in cognitive neuroscience or a related field (psychology, biology, biomedical sciences, computer sciences, or any relevant MSc). Experience with psychophysiology, virtual reality game design, user experience assessment, and advanced statistical analyses is desirable. Fluency in Dutch and English, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a proactive, goal-directed attitude are required. Even if you do not meet all criteria, you are encouraged to apply if the role interests you. To apply, submit your application online via the provided link, addressing your letter to Dr. Floris Klumpers. The application form will specify required documents. Interviews will be held in late May and early June, with a preferred start date of 1 September 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Floris Klumpers at the provided email address.

PhD Position: Designing Virtual Reality Biofeedback for Enhanced Emotion Regulation in Police and Youth

This PhD position at Radboud University offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the CONTEXT project, a nation-wide Dutch collaboration aimed at enhancing emotion regulation in police officers and youth through innovative virtual reality biofeedback methods. The project is funded by the NWO National Science Agenda and brings together eight academic institutions and over twenty societal partners, including police, youth organizations, and healthcare providers. The goal is to develop personalized biofeedback tools that help individuals recognize and manage stress signals, ultimately preventing violent escalations and fostering societal resilience. As a PhD candidate, you will play a pivotal role in refining and validating a virtual reality biofeedback game designed for both youth and police. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with stakeholders, end-users, game designers, and the CONTEXT science team to enhance the game and its biofeedback algorithms. You will conduct user-interaction tests, record and analyze psychophysiological measures such as heart rate variability during acute stress, and optimize biofeedback algorithms. After initial assessments, you will help set up a large-scale trial to evaluate the efficacy of these methods. The project involves extensive interdisciplinary collaboration, including work packages focused on neuroimaging, ecological momentary and physiological assessments, theory and ethics, and societal impact. The position is hosted at Radboud University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, within the Experimental Psychopathology and Treatment department of the Behavioural Science Institute. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, with strong connections to psychology, neuroscience, communication science, and educational science.
