York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering is recruiting a MASc or PhD student in Civil Engineering for an interdisciplinary project on drinking water safety in multi-unit rental housing in Southern Ontario. The project is titled “Can I drink the tap water?” An interdisciplinary action framework for water quality assurance in multi-unit rental housing and is supported by York University’s recently funded New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Exploration project. The work brings together civil and electrical engineering, urban planning, and geography expertise from York University and the University of Waterloo . Research activities will include engaging with stakeholders and research collaborators, conducting water quality sampling, interviewing tenants and building owners/managers, and contributing to the development of point-of-need and distributed sensors for real-time water quality monitoring. The project is focused on practical solutions for water safety challenges in rental housing, including aging plumbing, building materials, maintenance practices, and other building-level risks. Applicants should have a background in civil engineering or environmental engineering (or a closely related field). For PhD applicants, a research-based MASc or equivalent is also required. Candidates must meet York’s GPA and English proficiency requirements. Strong communication skills, the ability to work independently, and an interest in engineering and water management are emphasized; field/lab experience and prior research output are assets.
