PhD in Urban-Ocean Nexus and Blue Economy at Utrecht University

Utrecht University’s Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the urban-ocean nexus and the development of an inclusive, resilient blue economy. The project investigates the interconnectedness of urbanization and blue economy development, with comparative research in Indonesia (Makassar Strait, Kalimantan) and the Netherlands (Zeeland/North Sea). The research aims to assess environmental and social impacts, planetary health, and governance models for coastal communities, using interdisciplinary approaches from human geography, spatial planning, development studies, and environmental health. The PhD candidate will conduct literature reviews, qualitative and spatial research, and use mixed-methods including field interviews, observation, and visualization tools. The role involves publishing findings, presenting at international conferences, and contributing to teaching and supervision of bachelor/master theses (up to 10% of the appointment). The research is embedded in the International Development Studies group and involves collaboration with academic and societal partners in Indonesia and the Netherlands. Applicants should have a master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline (development studies, human geography, anthropology, sociology, political science, public health, or related), strong field research and analytical skills, and excellent scientific English writing. Experience with academic publishing and knowledge of development issues in Indonesia and the Netherlands are advantageous. The position offers a 1-year contract, extendable to 4 years, with a gross monthly salary of €3,059–€3,881, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, flexible employment terms, and professional development opportunities.
