PhD Position in Theoretical Quantum Optics and Quantum Technologies at University of Innsbruck

The Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Innsbruck is inviting applications for a PhD position in the field of theoretical quantum optics, under the supervision of Professor Klemens Hammerer. The research group focuses on quantum metrology, precision measurement, and the theoretical modeling of open many-body quantum systems and light-matter interaction for quantum technologies. Research topics include trapped ions for atomic clocks and quantum information processing, Bose–Einstein condensates for matter-wave interferometry, correlated quantum states in resonators and waveguides, and quantum mechanical properties of mesoscopic and macroscopic solid-state structures. The group employs a wide range of analytical and numerical methods to study quantum dynamics and complex quantum correlations, closely collaborating with experimental groups both nationally and internationally. The position is a university assistantship (Universitätsassistent:in - Dissertationsstelle) with a minimum gross salary of €1,857 per month (14 times per year) for 20 hours per week, increasing to €2,785 per month (14 times per year) for 30 hours per week upon submission of the dissertation agreement. The salary may be higher depending on relevant experience. Additional benefits include flexible working hours, a family-friendly environment, paid lunch break, meal subsidy, and professional development opportunities. Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate expertise in basic and advanced quantum theory, scientific programming, and good English skills. Knowledge in theoretical quantum optics, experience in programming and numerical physics, teamwork, and self-management are desired. Applicants are required to submit a written outline of their dissertation proposal (maximum 5 pages) as part of the application. The University of Innsbruck values equal opportunity and diversity, and strongly encourages qualified women and individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses to apply. The application deadline is 02.02.2026. For more information about the research group, visit the Quantum Optics and Quantum Metrology group page .
