PhD in Interpretable AI for Coupled Multiphysics of Geomaterials

EPFL’s Data-Driven Mechanics Laboratory is advertising a fully funded PhD position in interpretable AI for coupled multiphysics of geomaterials . The project sits at the intersection of computational mechanics , multiphysics , granular materials , and machine learning , with a strong emphasis on discovering governing equations and constitutive relations from rich micro-mechanical and experimental data. The successful candidate will contribute to a next-generation data-driven framework for scientific discovery in geomaterials. Research directions include physics-based modeling across scales (discrete/mesoscale/continuum), thermodynamics-informed machine learning, and neurosymbolic AI. The work is positioned for applications in geophysics, energy, and sustainability, and offers the opportunity to collaborate with experimental research groups. Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, Computer Science, or a related field; strong programming/computational skills in Python/C/C++; and excellent English communication skills. Funding: fully funded PhD with competitive salary and employment conditions, plus access to world-class computational resources and an interdisciplinary research environment at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. Application deadline: 2026-07-15. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged. How to apply: send a single PDF by email to [email protected] with a CV (max 2 pages, including referee contacts), detailed transcripts, and a motivation letter (max 1 page). Use the subject line “PhD Application LMD - Last Name”.
