Geography and Regional Research

The University of Vienna's Department of Geography and Regional Research, the oldest and largest geography department in Austria, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the 'Spatial Data Science and GeoCommunication' group led by Professor Krzysztof Janowicz. The department is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, combining computational, social, and natural sciences to address major global challenges. The research group is international and diverse, with expertise in knowledge graphs, GeoAI, research data management, geo-semantics, geographic information retrieval, geo-visualization, and social sensing. The group’s work focuses on computational methods to enhance the representation, retrieval, integration, analysis, visualization, and communication of spatial and spatiotemporal data, with applications in humanitarian relief, disaster mitigation, social sensing, location-based services, environmental intelligence, transportation, privacy, and conflict studies. The group also explores the intersection of information science, cognitive and behavioral geography, cognitive science, and philosophy, with current interests in (Geo)AI ethics, bias, sustainability, and alignment. The postdoc will have the opportunity to develop an independent research profile while collaborating with a leading team in Spatial Data Science and GeoAI. Responsibilities include contributing to research, teaching, and administration; leading and contributing to international publications and presentations; acquiring third-party funding; independent teaching and student supervision; and maintaining the group’s strong ties with industry, government, and international partners. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, a strong publication record, programming and spatial data analysis skills, and the ability to work in English. The position offers a fixed-term contract until September 2029, a competitive salary (EUR 4,932.90 per month, 14 times a year), flexible working hours, opportunities for professional development, and a supportive, international work environment. The University of Vienna is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and encourages applications from qualified women. The application deadline is March 10, 2025.
