Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Design Foundations at Appalachian State University
The Department of Applied Design at Appalachian State University is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Design Foundations. This position is ideal for candidates with a terminal degree such as an MFA in art or design and demonstrated college-level teaching experience. The role focuses on teaching introductory classes in the fundamentals of design, serving students in Interior Design, Industrial Design, and Apparel Design and Merchandising. Courses may include Visual Literacy 1 (2D), Visual Literacy 2 (3D), and Digital Design, with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design, drawing, color theory, 3D practices, and spatial/form-based exploration. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially as applied to design, is required.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty in a coordinated, multi-section program, participate in curriculum development, and contribute to program development. Experience with critique-based pedagogy, facilitating group discussions, and supporting diverse student populations is highly valued. Evidence of effective curriculum development, scholarly or creative work, and service within the academic community is expected.
The Department of Applied Design offers three NASAD-accredited undergraduate majors: Apparel Design and Merchandising, Industrial Design (Furniture and Product Design), and Interior Design. The department features design studios, prototyping spaces, computer labs, and a collaborative faculty focused on enhancing human experience through design. Students benefit from experiential learning and are required to complete internships as part of their education.
This position carries a teaching load of four courses per semester (12 credit hours), with the possibility of teaching summer courses for additional compensation.
