Postdoctoral Position in Agroforestry, Remote Sensing, and Deep Learning at University of Copenhagen

The University of Copenhagen's Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management is inviting applications for a two-year postdoctoral position focused on changes in agroforestry. The successful candidate will join TreeSense, the Center for Remote Sensing and Deep Learning of Global Tree Resources, and work within the Section for Geography. The research will leverage remote sensing and machine learning to characterize and quantify global woody vegetation dynamics, with a particular emphasis on agroforestry systems such as homegardens, forest farming, and silvopasture. The postdoctoral researcher will apply deep learning techniques to analyze the extent, types, and changes in major agroforestry systems, collaborating with local partners to co-produce stakeholder tools. TreeSense offers a vibrant, international research environment, with a team comprising principal investigators, postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduates. The postdoc will lead data analysis, contribute to writing research papers, and have opportunities to supervise MSc and PhD students. The position also involves presenting findings at regional and international conferences. The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management conducts interdisciplinary research on the Earth's physical, chemical, and biological environments and their interactions with human systems, supporting sustainable solutions for society. Applicants should have a PhD in remote sensing, environmental sciences, geography, land system science, or a related field. Essential skills include experience with deep learning, remote sensing, land cover mapping, and handling large-scale datasets. Strong communication and collaboration skills, as well as excellent English proficiency, are required. Desirable qualifications include experience with causal inference and a strong publication record in land system science. The position is full-time, starting June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, and is covered by standard Danish university postdoc employment agreements. Salary is according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, with the possibility of negotiation. To apply, submit your application in English electronically, including a motivated letter, CV, diplomas, and publication list. The deadline for applications is March 26, 2026. For further information, contact Associate Professor Laura Vang Rasmussen at [email protected]. More details about the department and the application process can be found on the university's website.

Three PhD positions in sustainable food systems and forgotten foods at the University of Copenhagen

Three PhD scholarships are open in sustainable food systems at the University of Copenhagen, within the ERC Consolidator project TRANSFORM-FARM led by Associate Professor Laura Vang Rasmussen. The project studies forgotten foods, also described as neglected and underutilized species, opportunity crops, or orphan crops, and how they can help address nutrition, poverty, and biodiversity loss. The three PhD fellows will join an international, highly interdisciplinary team based at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The research themes include common portfolios of forgotten foods such as amaranth, pigeon pea, and okra; baobab; and moringa. The work involves field data collection in Tanzania and Malawi, collaboration with local communities, and co-creating scenarios for equitable scaling of forgotten foods. Relevant study areas include agriculture, environmental science, geography, land system science, agroecology, agronomy, health, nutrition, biodiversity, and social justice. The post highlights desirable experience in remote-area data collection, quasi-experimental methods, R or Python, food consumption and nutrition surveys, poverty surveys, bird surveys, and equity-focused research. Eligibility: applicants should hold a master’s degree in a related field and have strong communication skills plus excellent English. The positions are full-time for 3 years under the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme), subject to enrolment at the PhD School at the Faculty of Science. Application deadline: 10 May 2026 at 23:59 GMT+2. Start date: 1 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants must submit a motivated letter, a one-page research proposal, CV, diplomas, transcripts, and a publication list through the university job portal.
