PhD and Postdoctoral Opportunities in Marine Ecological and Evolutionary Immunology, Symbiosis, and Coral Disease
Texas State University’s Symbiommunity Lab in the Department of Biology is recruiting
PhD students
and may also have
postdoctoral
and technician opportunities. The lab is led by
Lauren Fuess
(Assistant Professor of Biology) and focuses on
marine ecological and evolutionary immunology
, with research at the intersection of
symbiosis
,
coral disease
, and host-microbe interactions.
Current and future projects include work on facultatively symbiotic corals (
Astrangia
) and
Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease
. Students joining the group can expect training in a range of integrative methods, including
microscopy
,
biochemical assays
,
next-generation sequencing
(transcriptomics, genomics, single-cell sequencing), and
physiology
. The lab also mentions opportunities to work on NSF-funded projects.
PhD openings:
at least 2 students are being recruited. Spring 2027 start is preferred, with Fall 2027 also considered; the lab post also notes that Summer/Fall 2026 start dates are preferred in the longer opportunity page. Priority review deadline is
May 15, 2026
.
Eligibility:
applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree in
biology
,
immunology
,
ecology
, or a related field. Strong communication and scientific inquiry skills are desired, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. For postdoctoral roles, the lab is especially interested in candidates with
bioinformatics
or
molecular
skills.
Funding:
the graduate package includes a guaranteed stipend of
$3,618/month
for 10.5 months (about
$38,000/year
), with support for at least 4 years for MS holders and 5 years for BS holders.
Tuition support
and additional summer salary are also available through scholarships and funded grants, with support combining departmental TA funding and external RA funding. The lab also encourages applications for external fellowships such as
Simons
,
GRFP
,
NSF PRFB
,
Ford
, and
AAI
.
How to apply:
email Dr. Lauren Fuess with a cover letter, a statement of past research achievements and relevant skills, a brief statement of contributions and project ideas for the lab, your CV, and a list of three references. Priority consideration is given to applications received by
May 15, 2026
.
