Microbiome research

The Walter Lab at APC Microbiome Ireland, University College Cork, is recruiting a Postdoctoral or Senior Postdoctoral Researcher for the Microbe Restore project. This initiative, funded by Science Foundation Ireland, focuses on developing nutritional and microbiome-based therapeutic strategies to improve human health and prevent chronic disease. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment, collaborating closely with Professor Jens Walter and Professor Liam O’Mahony’s teams. The research will investigate the molecular mechanisms by which microbes and metabolites modulate mucosal inflammatory responses, with the goal of translating discoveries into applications with commercial potential. The position offers access to world-class research infrastructure in microbiome, immunology, and metabolomics, as well as a vibrant academic and industry-facing network. The role involves leading and coordinating interdisciplinary projects, driving innovation, and shaping the future of microbiome science at APC and University College Cork. Responsibilities include conducting and leading research programs, securing competitive funding, mentoring graduate students, and contributing to the commercialisation of research findings. Applicants must hold a PhD in microbiology, bioinformatics, immunology, nutrition, or related fields, and demonstrate appropriate research experience and technical competence. Experience with multi-omics integration, immunology, or microbiome-host interactions is highly desirable. For Senior Postdoctoral appointments, at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience and supervisory skills are required. The position is full-time, temporary, and not funded by an EU programme. English language proficiency is required, and Garda vetting and international police clearance may be part of the selection process. The application deadline is 3 October 2025. Interested candidates should apply via the University College Cork website and may contact the provided email address for further information.

Microbiome research

The Walter Lab at APC Microbiome Ireland, University College Cork, is recruiting a Post-Doctoral or Senior Post-Doctoral researcher for the Microbe Restore project, a Science Foundation Ireland-funded initiative. The lab develops nutritional and microbiome-based therapeutic strategies to improve human health and prevent chronic disease. This position will work closely with Professor Jens Walter and Professor Liam O’Mahony, whose teams investigate the molecular basis for microbe- and metabolite-mediated modulation of mucosal inflammatory responses. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary hub at the forefront of microbiome research, benefiting from APC’s world-class infrastructure in microbiome, immunology, and metabolomics, as well as a vibrant academic and industry-facing network. The role involves leading and coordinating a portfolio of interdisciplinary projects, with a major focus on translating discoveries in microbiome science into applications with commercial potential, including product development and potential university spin-out activities. The initial focus will be on the Microbe Restore program, which explores nutritional and microbiome-based strategies to restore the microbiome for improved human health. The Fellow will drive the analysis of collaborative projects investigating how the gut microbiome influences immune and metabolic responses, and will help shape the strategic direction of interdisciplinary research at APC, mentor junior scientists, and develop innovative, translational solutions for human health. The appointment is for 12-15 months, with a salary range of €46,306 - €52,863 p.a. (IUA PD1 Scale) or €54,307 - €59,064 p.a. (IUA PD2 Scale), depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and have experience in microbiome-focused research. Applications must be submitted online via the University College Cork vacancy portal before 12 noon (Irish Local Time) on Friday, October 3rd, 2025. UCC is committed to diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds.
