PhD Candidate in Education: Writing, Assessment and Learning in the Context of Generative AI

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Education, focusing on writing, assessment, and learning in the context of generative AI. This opportunity is hosted by The Norwegian Centre for Writing Education and Research and the Department of Teacher Education, and is affiliated with the national AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN). The PhD project will investigate how generative AI is reshaping educational practices, particularly in writing, assessment, and learning. The research may also extend to adjacent themes such as language education, literacy, professional development, and school leadership, depending on the candidate’s background and interests. As part of Cluster 5 of AI LEARN, the project will address AI literacy, professional development, and the design of data-informed learning environments that promote inclusion, equity, and critical engagement with AI. The successful candidate will conduct case studies in schools and flexible learning environments, facilitate participatory design activities, collect and analyze empirical data, write research articles, attend international conferences, and participate in collaborative activities within the AI LEARN centre. The position also involves organizing dissemination and communication activities to share research findings with stakeholders. Applicants must have a relevant academic background in education, teacher education, or related pedagogical fields, holding a Norwegian master’s degree or equivalent (minimum 120 ECTS credits at the master's level). Master's students may apply if their degree is completed before the position starts. A strong academic record (grade B or better) is required, and candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (level B2) and English. Preferred qualifications include experience in the school sector, research assistance, and published or submitted research. Personal qualities such as reliability, teamwork, independence, and structured work are highly valued. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund, a project budget, and access to employee benefits and discounts. The employment period is three years, with possible extension for career promotion work. The primary workplace is Trondheim, but individual arrangements may be considered.
