15 Fully Funded PhD Positions in Health, Environment, and Anthropology (HEALENAE Doctoral Network, Europe & Africa)

The EU-funded Doctoral Network Health and Environment in Africa and Europe (HEALENAE) is offering 15 fully funded, salaried PhD positions in the field of anthropology, with a focus on health, environment, and interdisciplinary research across Africa and Europe. The Centre of African Studies & Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh is recruiting two of these positions, with additional opportunities at Aarhus University, University of Oslo, KU Leuven, Makerere University, University of Nairobi, and University of Cape Town. Projects cover topics such as epidemics, disease, state formation, vector-borne diseases, agricultural intensification, climate change migration, toxic environments, and biodiversity conservation. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent (120 ECTS) in anthropology or related social sciences and humanities, and must not already have a doctoral degree. EU, UK, and Uganda eligibility criteria apply, including mobility rules that restrict recent residence in the recruiting country. All positions are fully funded for three years, including salary, generous research funding, and mobility allowance. The network offers a unique interdisciplinary and cross-continental research environment, with opportunities for collaboration, secondments, and engagement with local and international organizations. To apply, candidates should review the project descriptions and eligibility criteria on the HEALENAE website and submit applications directly to the recruiting universities. The application deadline is March 1, 2026, with a start date of September 1, 2026. For more information, visit the HEALENAE website or contact the network coordinators. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in anthropology, health, environment, and global research collaboration.
