PhD in AI for Proton-Acoustics and Real-Time 3D Dosimetry for Proton Therapy

PhD opportunity at the University of Surrey in AI for medical imaging , with a focus on proton-acoustics and real-time 3D dosimetry for proton therapy . This project sits at the intersection of computer science , physics , mathematics , biomedical engineering , and medical science , and is aimed at improving cancer treatment through accurate in vivo dose verification and beam monitoring. You will work on deep learning methods for denoising weak and noisy acoustic signals, AI-driven 3D dose reconstruction, and real-time proton beam monitoring. The project is closely connected with the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI , with collaborations involving the National Physical Laboratory and the Institute of Cancer Research . Funding : fully funded studentship with a stipend of £25,805 per year , UK-level fees covered , and generous research training support. The opportunity is open only to candidates eligible for UK/home tuition fees . Eligibility : applicants should have a First Class degree or an MSc with Distinction (or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, physics, or engineering. Strong programming, analytical, and mathematical skills are required. Prior experience in AI/machine learning is expected, and tomographic imaging experience is desirable. Deadline : 12 July 2026. Start date : 1 October 2026. Apply via the CVSSP/Vision, Speech and Signal Processing PhD programme page, and upload a document with the project title and supervisor name instead of a research proposal. Supervisor : Dr Lucia Florescu, Lecturer in Medical Imaging, University of Surrey. Informal enquiries: [email protected].
