This three-year postdoctoral research fellowship in mucosal immunology is offered at the University of Oslo, funded by Coeliac UK. The project investigates whether low-level gluten exposure, below the current definition of a gluten-free diet, can cause gut inflammation and damage in individuals with coeliac disease. Using a placebo-controlled oral gluten challenge trial, the research aims to determine if repeated low-dose gluten can induce immune activation and low-level gut inflammation. The study builds on recent findings from the Centre (PMID 40828615), highlighting the role of interferon gamma in gut damage and remodeling. The successful candidate will perform multiparameter flow cytometry on gut biopsies from patients subjected to low-dose gluten challenge, as well as short-term ex vivo biopsy cultures. The goal is to identify the source of inflammatory cytokines and establish a mechanistic link between immune cell activation, cytokine secretion, and gut inflammation/remodeling in response to dietary gluten. Advanced cell biology methods will be used, including ex vivo short-term intestinal biopsy culture, flow cytometry, microscopy imaging, and mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The research environment is world-leading in coeliac disease, with a strong track record in mucosal immunology, cell biology, and tissue processing. The postdoctoral fellow will join Prof. Ludvig Sollid’s research group at the Institute of Immunology, Oslo University Hospital – Rikshospitalet, and will work in a multidisciplinary team with access to relevant training and support. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in medical sciences or a related field. Experience in cell biology, immunology, flow cytometry, and tissue processing is highly desirable. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work collaboratively are preferred. The position is fully funded for three years, covering salary and research expenses.
