Postdoctoral Scholarship in Vibrational Spectroscopy of Microbial Biofilms at Umeå University

Umeå University, one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions, is offering a two-year postdoctoral scholarship in vibrational spectroscopy of microbial biofilms within the Department of Chemistry. The research project focuses on the characterization of microbial systems using advanced optical photothermal infrared (OPTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, with an emphasis on method development and application in life sciences. The project is interdisciplinary, positioned at the intersection of analytical chemistry, chemometrics, and microbiology, and aims to develop and apply cutting-edge methodologies for studying microorganisms in various contexts, including environmental, industrial, and medical settings. The successful candidate will join a creative, international research environment with access to state-of-the-art research infrastructures, including the Vibrational Spectroscopy Core Facility (ViSp). The project is conducted in close collaboration with Prof. Madeleine Ramstedt (Department of Chemistry, Umeå University) and Dr. Andras Gorzsas (Science for Life Laboratory group leader). The research will involve method development for OPTIR-Raman instrumentation, multivariate analysis, and experimental investigation of complex research questions related to microbial biofilms. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in chemistry, microbiology, or a related field, preferably awarded within the last three years. Required qualifications include advanced experimental research experience, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, creativity, analytical problem-solving skills, and strong English communication skills. Meriting qualifications include experience in analytical chemistry method development, vibrational spectroscopy, microbiological work (including cultivation and flow systems), and multivariate analysis. The scholarship is funded by the Carl Trygger Foundation and provides a stipend of 30,000 SEK per month. The position is full-time and does not constitute employment. The application deadline is 20 February 2026, with the anticipated start date of 15 April 2026 or by agreement. Applications must be submitted via Umeå University’s Varbi e-recruitment system and include a cover letter, project proposal, CV with publication list, verified degree certificates, electronic link to the doctoral thesis and up to five relevant articles, and contact information for two references. For further information, contact Prof. Madeleine Ramstedt or Dr. Andras Gorzsas. Umeå University is renowned for its dynamic research environment and was the site of the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool. The Department of Chemistry is a leading research hub with strong programs in biological chemistry, environmental and biogeochemistry, organic chemistry, and technical chemistry. The university offers a vibrant postdoctoral network and access to a wide range of research infrastructures.
