PhD Positions in Human–AI Collaboration and Networked XR Systems at Northeastern University

Northeastern University’s Spatial Intelligence Research Group, led by Assistant Professor Mallesh Dasari, is recruiting 1–2 PhD students for Fall 2026. The group focuses on cutting-edge research in XR systems, AI-driven interaction, computer networking, and streaming volumetric/4D media. Research topics include human–AI collaboration in XR, spatial interfaces for AI assistance, multimodal perception, XR task support, and networked systems for XR such as low-latency networking, edge/cloud offloading, adaptive streaming, and protocols for immersive workloads. The PhD program in Computer Engineering at Northeastern is research-based and offers flexibility in course requirements. Applicants can enter with a BS or MS in computer engineering or a closely related field. The curriculum covers computer architecture, software engineering, VLSI, microprocessor-based design, and applied algorithms, providing a strong foundation in both hardware and software design. Students benefit from Northeastern’s location in Boston, a biotechnology and technology hub, and have access to internships, co-op programs, and professional development workshops. Financial support is available, including stipends and tuition coverage. The program encourages hands-on, curious applicants who are excited to build real systems. International students are welcome and may need to meet English language requirements. The application deadline for Fall 2026 is December 28, 2025. Interested candidates should contact Mallesh Dasari at [email protected] and review the PhD admissions page for detailed requirements and application procedures. Key research areas: XR systems, human–AI collaboration, spatial computing, computer networking, volumetric media, edge and cloud computing, AI-driven interaction, multimodal perception, and low-latency networking.
