Professor and Department Head in Food Science and Technology at University of Georgia
The University of Georgia's Department of Food Science and Technology (FST), within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is seeking a Professor and Department Head to lead a nationally recognized department. This leadership role offers the opportunity to guide a vibrant academic community with nearly 28 faculty members, a strong graduate program, and impactful centers such as the Center for Food Safety (CFS) and FoodPIC. The department is known for its excellence in teaching, research, Extension, and industry engagement, and is committed to advancing food science through interdisciplinary initiatives and external partnerships.
The position is a tenured, 9-month faculty appointment with an additional 2 months of summer salary. The successful candidate will be responsible for strategic planning, faculty development, and advancing research, teaching, and Extension across the Athens and Griffin campuses. Major responsibilities include leadership of departmental programs, administrative oversight, faculty recruitment and development, building interdisciplinary research and Extension programs, and fostering a positive, collegial environment. The department head will also play a key role in securing extramural funding, supporting student mentoring, and developing policy and strategic planning in collaboration with university and industry partners.
Applicants must hold a doctorate in food science and technology or a related field, with a record of excellence in teaching, research, and/or Extension, and must qualify for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor. Visionary leadership, strategic planning experience, and demonstrated success in academic, industry, regulatory, or government organizations are essential. Preferred qualifications include prior administrative experience, experience with land-grant university structures, and a strong national reputation.
